It is my opinion that purchasing oil in a smaller quantity is always best. So many things can happen that compromise their therapeutic qualities such as; oils can go rancid with age and if not properly stored. They can also become contaminated by allowing the dropper to come into contact with the skin and thereby compromising the therapeutic qualities contained within.
Not to worry though....no essential oil has to be tossed out even if you know it's past its therapeutic shelf life! Hey! that's good news! You can still use them for cleaning, freshening and scenting. They may not be "as" potent at killing germs but will still disinfect to some degree.
As with any product, fresh is best…..in my opinion except for patchouli’s aroma! In the perfumery industry, it is interesting to note that Patchouli improves with age, and that the aged product is what is preferred over freshly harvested.
In my store, I offer essential oil blends in 15ml size bottles and pure essential oils in 5/8 dram. With the pure oil always remember you must dilute them with the carrier oil of your choice. A 5/8 dram of essential oil will give you approximately 46 drops more or less depending on the thickness of the oil.
For a 5% dilution: 5 drops of EO to 5 ml (one teaspoon) of carrier
For a 2% dilution: 2 drops of EO to 5 ml (one teaspoon) of carrier
For a 1% dilution: 1 drop of EO to 5 ml (one teaspoon) of carrier
So as you can see 46 (+or-) drops will last for some time depending on the oils viscosity and frequency of use.
Many many Essential Oils are effective against bacteria and viruses. A synthetically manufactured antibiotic will kill off all the bacteria in your body including the beneficial friendly bacteria that our body needs whereas the essential oil won't do that! The Essential Oils will kill off the bad guys if-you-will and nurture the good guys! It's like there is an additional intelligence built into these oils that seem to know what our bodies need. They give us what we need and leave the rest of the body alone so there are no side effects! That puts the Essential Oils apart from all Pharmaceutical drugs!
